Channel Surfing: Awesome TV Picks for the week of 05/04/2020

This week’s Channel Surfing TV picks are all animation based. Singer/songwriter, the Weeknd makes a guest appearance on American Dad!. Following Rick and Morty’s return this week, co-creator, Justin Roiland, has his second show, Solar Opposites, debut on Hulu. Then on Sunday night, those who like demented retellings of classic stories, check out J.J. Villard’s Fair Tales.

The Weeknd on a Monday

American Dad! has had a lengthy run that spans two different channels and 17 seasons. In that time, many different famous names have lent their voice to the animated series. This week, multi Grammy winning artist, The Weeknd, is set to guest star. The episode, entitled “A Starboy is Born” is co-written by the singer.

In it, Stan kidnaps the superstar in order to teach Roger a lesson. Those who tune in will also be able to hear the premiere of a new track from the guest star. The next new episode of American Dad! airs Monday night, May 4, on TBS.

Assimilating to Life on Earth

Justin Roiland and Mike McMahan are best known for their work on Rick and Morty. The pair branched out and co-created a new show on Hulu. This time it’s a sci-fi comedy adventure about a family with a patriarch who is a genius but a bit of an a-hole. The family are also aliens that crash land on Earth.

In Solar Opposites, the family is evenly split between those who think our planet is awesome and those who think it’s awful. In addition to adjusting to life on Earth with humans, the group is tasked with raising the Pupa, a supercomputer that will eventually evolve, consume them and terraform the planet. All eight episodes of the first season will be available on Hulu on Friday, May 8.

Twisted Takes on Familiar Stories

Another person with ties to Adult Swim is J.J. Villard. He created the show King Star King, which aired on the Adult Swim streaming service before being shown on T.V. The Emmy award winning animator returns with his new series, J.J. Villard’s Fairy Tales.

It is a new, twisted, fun take on the timeless Brothers Grimm fairy tales. Villard tackles such stories featuring Goldie Locks, Rapunzel, Snow White and more with a modern take that is packed into a ball of raw, visceral, gross weirdness. J.J. Villard’s Fairy Tales premieres Sunday night, May 10, on Adult Swim.
