Channel Surfing: Awesome TV picks for the week of 06/29/2020

Killer Nuns, a killer musical, and killer teens.

For the second straight week, streaming services dominate the Channel Surfing TV picks. If you like watching holy women kick some butt, Warrior Nun might be for you. Usually, COVID-19 leads to bad things but because of the pandemic, the filmed stage version of Hamilton is skipping movie theaters and coming directly to our homes. Lastly, Hanna returns for a second season expanding the world and exploring the other teenage female super soldiers in the Utrax program.

God’s Champion

Netflix is the place to see comic adaptation TV shows. Of course, there are the Marvel series featuring the members of the Defenders but smaller publishers have also had opportunities. Dark Horse has it’s The Umbrella Academy and IDW had a trio of V Wars, October Faction, and Locke & Key.

Coming this Thursday, July 2, is Warrior Nun, based off of the Antarctic Press comic title, Warrior Nun Areala. The story follows an orphaned teen who awakens in a morgue and discovers she possesses superpowers. She becomes a member of an ancient order that is tasked with protecting Earth from demons.

America Then, as Told by America Now

The next pick is a little cheat since it’s not technically a show but I can’t help myself. Premiering on Disney+ on Friday, July 3, is the filmed live stage production of Hamilton. This is a good opportunity to relive the phenomenon or catch it for the first time.

The musical tells the story of American founding father, Alexander Hamilton and is inspired by the 2004 biography of the titular character. Plus, it’s none of that traveling tour b-rated performers. The film features all of the original principal Broadway cast members. What a great way to celebrate before Independence Day.

An Almost Red Room

Hanna was a well-received action thriller film that came out in 2011. Amazon Prime developed a series based on the movie and it premiered last year. Now the second season is set to start this Friday, July 3, on the streaming service.

We continue to follow our heroine as she evades capture with her new “sister” and we’ll further explore the other girls of the Utrax program. Dermot Mulroney, Anthony Welsh, Severine Howell-Meri, and Cherelle Skeet are the newest cast additions for the upcoming season.
