[Fantasia] ‘Your Last Day on Earth’ review: Moving and beautiful time travel short

Look, but you can’t touch.

Time travel stories are incredibly difficult to pull off. Everything is theoretical and plot holes seem to be inherent to the genre. Your Last Day on Earth (Tu ultimo dia en la Tierra) is a fantastic short film screening at the Fantasia Film Festival.

The story revolves around a man who wants to spend one day with his wife. Time travel tours are possible in this world, though they are very expensive. There are some very strict rules, including wearing a fox mask. Breaking any of them will lead to death.

Your Last Day on Earth has a great aesthetic. It has the look of a promotional video. Some parts take on the look of cheap 1970s action movie. It is perfect for the short. The narrator speaks with a mix of longing and certainty. The music is absolutely stunning. It is equal parts moving, sad, and tense. All around, it is a gorgeous film.

The story will resonate emotionally with anyone who watches. The actions of the main character are very relatable. He simply wants to spend time with his wife. As the story unfolds, the revelations cause a gradual change in emotions. The ending is particularly powerful and well done.  Your Last Day on Earth is an absolute must see from Fantasia.
