Channel Surfing: Awesome TV picks for the week of 10/12/2020

A West Wing reunion, Star Trek: Discovery goes further into the future, and meet the Helstroms.

This week’s Channel Surfing TV picks span different genres from politics to science fiction to superhero horror. A West Wing reunion helps promotes awareness and voting for the upcoming presidential election. Star Trek: Discovery jumps to the future for its third season. Then siblings, Daimon and Ana, use their demonic powers for good in Helstrom.

A Presidential Reunion

If you haven’t heard, a very big election is coming up in a few weeks. In order to raise awareness to and support for the vision of the non-profit, nonpartisan organization, When We All Vote, The West Wing is getting the band back together for a special.

The cast and creatives will hold a theatrical stage presentation of the episode, “Hartfield’s Landing” from the third season. Most of the cast will return to reprise their roles with the exception of Leo McGarry, who will be played by Sterling K. Brown. The special will incorporate act breaks that include commentary from Michelle Obama, President Bill Clinton, Lin-Manuel Miranda and more.

A West Wing Special to Benefit When We All Vote is available to stream on HBO Max this Thursday, October 15.

Space (and Time): The Final Frontier

Many are just first seeing the adventures of the USS Discovery with the Star Trek Franchise show’s first season re-airing on CBS. But for those who’ve been following since the beginning, the third season is about to start this week.

Star Trek: Discovery has done a clever job establishing its own corner in the universe without affecting continuity by taking place in different time periods. Initially the series was set 10 years before the original series and now, in the upcoming season, we see the crew travel to the future. See what’s in store for Michael Burnham and company this Thursday, October 15, on CBS All Access.

Marvel Gets Demonic

The latest show coming from Marvel explores the supernatural and horror side of the universe. Helstrom follows the titular dysfunctional family with a serial killer father, a possessed mother, and a pair of siblings, Daimon and Ana, that hunt down and combat evil.

As you can imagine, there’s a lot of family drama and the estranged brother and sister must work through their baggage and issues to help their mom and confront a demonic threat. All ten episodes of Helstrom drop Friday, October 16, on Hulu. Catch AIPT’s first impressions of the series in the meantime.
