Movies

The way too early list of movies you should watch if you are liking ‘Cyberpunk 2077’

What to watch between your gameplay breaks.

Cyberpunk 2077 is this year’s most anticipated video game ever. Throughout various delays, fans have waited patiently (kind of) for the game’s release. Now that it has finally arrived, those of us who have been waiting nearly a decade have finally gotten to play for a few hours. Here is a way too early list of movies you should watch if you liking Cyberpunk.

(Other cyberpunk themed movies and anything starring Keanu Reeves are obvious. This list will avoid those films.)

The Warriors (1979)

Set in a dystopian future in a New York City run by gangs, The Warriors seems more like the template CD Projekt Red used for their latest game than the titular tabletop roleplaying game. Of course, the NYC in The Warriors is nowhere near as inviting as Night City. The Warriors sees the gang of the same name try to fight their way across the desiccated city. It is a story about friendship and freedom. Each corner promises salvation and guarantees danger.

Return to Oz (1985)

Much like Night City, Oz is a place of wonder and beauty. The stories of beauty and grandeur will attract anyone who hears them. It is when you arrive that you realize that nothing is as good as it seems. Return to Oz is a dark fantasy released in 1985 that is horrifying.  The land is filled with dangers and you have no idea who you can trust. It is a place that is best seen from a distance.

Happy Death Day (2017)

Through its constant delays this year, there has been on guarantee about Cyberpunk. When it was finally released, it would be filled with bugs. Playing the first person RPG constantly has the player asking themselves, “What is going to ruin this for me?” Happy Death Day is a horror movie from Blumhouse that is similar. Described as a carrier version of Groundhog Day, the film is surprisingly good. Still, the first time you watch it, you cannot help but think, “When does this movie start sucking?”

Atomic Blonde (2017)

Close your eyes. A stylish action story filled with brutal kills, intense action scenes, and a killer soundtrack. It is easy to confuse the Charlize Theron movie with Cyberpunk. The movie is action packed from the get go and its use of neon and music borders on too stylish. Lorraine Broughton is also a bad ass of the who will not let anyone stop her.

Midnight Run (1988)

One of the best moments of the Cyberpunk hype train was the surprise appearance of Keanu Reeves at E3 2019. In that one breathtaking moment, the game went from “I can’t wait ‘till it comes out” to “I GOTTA HAVE IT!!!” As it turns out, Keanu is not just making a cameo. He is an integral part of the game. Midnight Run is a 1988 action comedy that sees odd couple Robert De Niro and Charles Grodin on the run from the cops and the mob. It is funny and action packed and set a bar for odd couple pairings.

Worth a watch whether you like Cyberpunk 2077 or not
