Channel Surfing: Awesome TV picks for the week of 01/04/2021

A trivia game show, Ted Danson’s latest project, and a Neil Gaiman adaptation.

Start off 2021 right with our Channel Surfing TV picks for this week. Producers pushed back Alex Trebek’s last episodes of Jeopardy from Christmas to now in order to give him a proper send off. With no holiday obligations and no worries of preemptions from the NBA, fans can concentrate on these final five episodes. Later in the week, Ted Danson goes into politics in Mr. Mayor. Then the series adapted from the beloved Neil Gaiman book of the same name begins its third season when American Gods returns.

Saying Goodbye to a Legend

Last November, the world lost the iconic host of Jeopardy, Alex Trebek, who had been battling pancreatic cancer since February of 2019. For over 30 years, the man graced our television sets both entertaining and educating us through the popular trivia game show and his passing left a significant hole in the pop culture landscape.

Because the show is recorded in advance, Trebek’s final episodes are set to air this week beginning today until Friday in syndication. From his last on-air appearances, you would never guess his deteriorating health but that’s a testament to his resolve and determination. A series of guest are set to host Jeopardy in the short term, but whoever is chosen as Trebek’s successor will have the unenviable task of following in his footsteps.

Forget Garcetti, Give Me Neil Bremer

Mr. Mayor has quite the comedic pedigree. It comes from the minds of 30 Rock co-creators Tina Fey and Robert Carlock and stars the Good Place’s Ted Danson in the leading role. Rounding out the cast are Kyla Kenedy, Holly Hunter, Vella Lovell, Bobby Moynihan, and Mike Cabellon.

The sitcom follows Neil Bremer, a wealthy retired businessman who runs to become the mayor of Los Angeles. Surprisingly, he wins and is elected but has no clue what he’s doing. After all, he only ran to impress his teenage daughter. Now he must navigate the political landscape to discover what he really stands for all while improving his familial bonds.

The one-hour series premiere of Mr. Mayor will air Thursday, January 7, on NBC.

Faith is on the Line

American Gods returns and it continues to bring the stunning visual spectacle it’s known for. In addition, several new gods (not to be confused with “New Gods”) are introduced played by an interesting and diverse cast. Marilyn Manson, Iwan Rheon, Danny Trejo, Wale and more are set to appear.

The third season sees Shadow keeping a low profile in Lakeside, Wisconsin after learning the revelation between him and Mr. Wednesday. Meanwhile, a war is still brewing as both the Old and New Gods continue to recruit for their respective sides.

New episodes of American Gods begin Sunday, January 10, on Starz.
