Channel Surfing: Awesome TV picks for the week of 01/25/2021

A pair of shows with comics roots and the season finale of a dark comedy thriller.

Our Channel Surfing TV picks of the week involve a pair of shows with comics roots and the season finale of a dark comedy thriller. We finally get to meet the enigmatic Mr. Wilford when TNT’s runaway hit (and train), Snowpiercer, returns for its second season. A small town murder investigation receives help from someone out of this world in Resident Alien. Finally, we see if Dory can escape the evil clutches of the notorious, Chip Wreck, in the last Season 4 episodes of Search Party.

Mr. Wilford, I Presume?

Last May, the Snowpiercer franchise experienced a reboot when it made the jump from the big screen to television. Though it maintained the same premise of a post-apocalyptic world onboard a speeding train with social classes divided by train cars, it featured an all-new story with a different set of characters.

When we last left off, the Tailies led a successful revolt and take over Snowpiercer. However, their victory is short lived as a second train of survivors highjack them and demand their surrender to Mr. Wilford, the mysterious architect of humanity’s last hope. This season we’ll meet the man himself, played by Sean Bean, and see how his presence will affect life on the titular vehicle.

The second season of Snowpiercer premieres tonight on TNT.

Hiding in Plain Sight

Snowpiercer isn’t the only science fiction comic adaptation to air this week. This Wednesday, January 27, Resident Alien, will make its series debut on Syfy. Fans of the Dark Horse series from creators, Peter Hogan and Steve Parkhouse, can see if the show lives up to the great mystery stories of the source material.

Fan favorite, Alan Tudyk, plays the role of an extraterrestrial that crash lands on Earth while on a secret mission. In order to not draw attention, he uses his abilities to disguise himself from humans and assumes the identity of Harry Vanderspeigle, a small town doctor who keeps to himself in a remote cabin. His plans of lying low are disrupted when local authorities seek his help in solving a murder.

To the Rescue?

What began as a hunt for a missing acquaintance by Dory Sief and her friends in Search Party, has perpetually snowballed into bigger drama and problems based off of their actions. In the most recent season, the story takes an ironic turn with Dory disappearing after being kidnapped by a deranged superfan.

Drew, Elliott, and Portia are now hot on the trail of their missing companion but will they be able to rescue her in time? Will Dory’s Stockholm syndrome make her even want to be saved? Find out when the final four episodes of Season 4 drop on HBO Max this Thursday, January 28.
