Mt. Rushmores of Wrestling: power couples

A celebration of some of the best romance in wrestling.

Mount Rushmores of Wrestling is a series that breaks down the cream of the crop of professional wrestling in our quest to come to a consensus on the top 4 of any given category. In today’s edition we’re looking at power couples.

Eddie Guerrero & Chyna aka “Mamacita”Mt. Rushmores of Wrestling: power couples

Shane: Eddie Guerrero and Chyna may not have been around as an on screen couple for a long time, but they were definitely around for a good time. While their initial pairing might have come across as strange and random, the late-great Chyna and Eddie Guerrero made the most of their time together and became one of the Attitude Era’s most memorable pairings. I fondly remember Mamacita helping Latino Heat earn his GED and attending Eddie’s prom the same night he defended his European Championship in a Tux. It wasn’t long after two separate Intercontinental Championships runs (one for Chyna and Eddie respectively) before the duo ultimately fell apart due to Chyna posing for Playboy Magazine. They may have only been a couple for a better part of one year, but the weekly shenanigans and moments that Eddie and Chyna gave fans solidifies their place in the Mt. Rushmore of power couples.

Al Snow and HeadMt. Rushmores of Wrestling: power couples

Shan: It’s no secret now that Al Snow spent his early career in the WWF as a jobber. The constant losses and character changes began to drive him crazy so he ditched WWF and moved to ECW in 1997. He knew he was going to need a good gimmick to have a shot at getting over with ECW’s edgier crowd. Then by some crazy random happenstance, Al found Head. She was just what she sounds like, a plastic mannequin head with “HELP ME” scrawled on her forehead. To Al, Head was the perfect partner to channel all his manic energy into. When Head started appearing in matches and promos with Al, things started to change for them. Crowds were chanting “we want Head!” bobbing their own styrofoam heads to Al Snow’s intro. The idea sounded crazy and that’s why it worked. By 1998 Al Snow and Head were back with the WWF; he was what everybody wanted after all. Al would continue his illustrious career of confusing people by wrestling himself and getting toys pulled from Walmart for years to come.

Triple H & Stephanie McMahonMt. Rushmores of Wrestling: power couples

Shane: Triple H and Stephanie McMahon are one of the most recognizable couples in all of sports entertainment. Like all solid WWE relationships, the pairing of Stephanie McMahon and Triple H began with Trips drugging Steph and getting married at a drive-thru wedding chapel in Las Vegas. This wedding eventually led to the creation of the McMahon-Helmsey Era that controlled WWE television from 1999-2001. While the couple would eventually get divorced on screen in 2002, their romance behind the scenes was never better, eventually marrying in October 2003. The happily married couple would, for the most part, stay off WWE TV as a couple until the Authority storyline began in the summer of 2013. Much like the days of the McMahon-Helmsey Era, the Authority had their hands in everything WWE did for the better part of three long years. But what made the Authority work was the skillful blending of Triple H and Stephanie McMahon’s kayfabe roles as WWE performers and their actual relationship and roles behind the scenes. Triple H and Stephanie McMahon have been together as a power couple for over two decades and for longevity alone take their place at the top of the Mt. Rushmore wrestling power couples.

Edge and LitaMt. Rushmores of Wrestling: power couples

Shan: While the start of their relationship was full of real life drama, Lita and especially Edge (he was the Rate R Superstar after all) were two people who thrived off controversy. Lita was no stranger to wrestling relationships both real and kayfabe. She even had an unforgettable wrestling wedding to Kane. Though there was one thing she had never done, turned heel. After her relationship with Matt Hardy ended, Lita was in the perfect place to change her image. Edge was a boundary pushing ruthless aggression era darling. Needless to say, it was a match made in Hardcore Heaven. The two got into lots of antics during their run, most notably spearing Mick Foley through a flaming table. Edge and Lita even had simultaneous runs as WWE Champion and Women’s Champion while they were together, which of course they celebrated by “copulating” on live TV. They were probably one of the edgiest couples to come out of the WWE, and for that they deserve a spot on this Mount Rushmore.
