K is for K-2SO

K-2SO

Disney

K-2SO, or Kay, was a KX-series security droid that initially served the Galactic Empire during the Galactic Civil War until he was reprogrammed by Captain Cassian Andor, a member of the intelligence branch of the Rebel Alliance, after which time he served alongside Captain Andor as a fellow member of the Alliance until his destruction in 0 BBY.

Like all other Imperial KX-series security droids, K-2SO was manufactured by Arakyd Industries and had black color plating, white sensors, a standard 2.16 meter height, masculine build, and the Imperial crest imprinted on his right shoulder. KX-series droids were deployed to numerous Imperial installations to perform various duties, including escorting dignitaries, guarding and processing prisoners, protecting Imperial officers and/or high ranking officials, and handling basic protocol tasks. Kay was equipped with a built-in comm package, a computer interface arm that allowed him to connect with standard communication devices, and a recharge port.

Whereas most KX-series droids had no personalities or defining characteristics, K-2SO’s reprogramming led to him having quite the fun personality. Kay was fully self-aware and exhibited a stoic and cynical attitude towards his missions with Cassian Andor, was often extremely sarcastic, and was very independent. On more than one occasion he disobeyed Cassian’s orders when he felt that they were foolish.

At some point during K-2SO’s service to the Empire, he was captured and reprogrammed by Captain Cassian Andor. During the process, Kay tried to strangle and arrest Andor, but he was ultimately disabled before he could accomplish either task. After his reprogramming, Kay became Andor’s faithful partner within the Rebel Alliance’s Intelligence Service and together that conducted a number of missions on behalf of the Alliance around the galaxy. The former Imperial droid had run-ins with the famous droids R2-D2 and C-3PO, and even rescued Rebel troops from Mustafar before Darth Vader captured them.

In 0 BBY, K-2SO accompanied Extraction Team Bravo to a labor camp on Wobani where he and the team extracted Jyn Erso. Erso tried to escape during the extraction, but she was knocked down by Kay who told her not to resist her rescue attempt. Following the rescue of Jyn Erso, Kay and Captain Andor brought her to the Holy City on Jedha and then the planet Eadu in the search for Erso’s father, Galen. Following the death of Galen Erso on Eadu, the trio returned to the Rebel base on Yavin 4, where they planned an assault on the Imperial records installation at Scarif to retrieve the plans to the Death Star.

On the planet Scarif, K-2SO met his end at the hands of Stormtroopers who were attempting to gain access to the records vault that Kay was guarding. Inside the vault, Cassian Andor and Jyn Erso were stealing the plans to the Death Star, and Kay was the only thing standing in the Stormtroopers’ way. Kay engaged the Stormtroopers in a blaster fight and ultimately sacrificed himself for Cassian and Jyn so that they could successfully escape with the plans. Without the sacrifice of K-2SO, the Rebel Alliance would have likely never received the plans for the Death Star. He is one of the great unsung heroes of the Rebel Alliance and the Galactic Civil War.
