[SXSW ’21] ‘Chuj Boys of Summer’ review: Beautiful direction highlights the concept of home

The story belongs to the Chuj boys.

Chuj Boys of Summer is an intriguing story about Mayan youths who travel to Colorado for work. Written by Max Walker-Silverman and Marcos Ordonez Ixwalanhkej Mendoza, the story belongs to the Chuj boys and their experience. Great cinematography and strong characters shape the Chuj Boys of Summer

The film features some beautiful shots of the mountainside. The expansive land contributes to the sublime effect of nature on the characters. Yakin (Yack Alux) narrates this film and comments on the similarities between the Colorado mountain range and those of Guatemala. The film examines the definition of home and happiness as the boys work together and support each other in their goals.

Chuj Boys of Summer has a very talented cast. Yack Alux, Pedro Lucas, and Felipe Jorge share a wonderful dynamic. The film touches on family and the chemistry between the cast is reflective of that theme.

SXSW is March 16 – March 20. Tickets and a full lineup can be found here.
