Power Pack’s “Outlawed” mini is the comic equivalent of a sugar rush, giving you all the sweetness you can handle for five issues. As a mini, it’s great — and it’s everything Power Pack fans could have wanted.
Issue #5 opens up where the last one left off, partnering Wolverine with the kids once again. North writes an extremely lovable Logan — probably the most likable he’s been in a long time — and his interactions with the Power Pack kids are nothing short of wholesome. Considering he’s teamed up with the kids before in previous comics, this team-up isn’t surprising, but it is loads of fun.
One great thing about the Power Pack mini was giving each character an issue focused on their own narration. So for issue #5, each character now gets their own section to narrate, giving everyone a chance to shine. It also highlights just how good North is at writing the kids, each getting their own distinct personality and feel throughout the comic. Their dialogue boxes don’t sound the same in the least –and even if they weren’t color-coded, it’d be clear which characters North is writing.
The issue wraps up everything in a neat little bow, ending the Kamala’s Law conflict for Power Pack while allowing them to help other young heroes in similar predicaments in the end. Because it’s a Power Pack book, the themes of family and togetherness are present throughout the entire issue, and it ends on an adorable note.
The thread about Katie telling their parents about their powers comes back in a really cute way. Ryan North is great at capturing the youth of these characters, making them believable kids in the modern-day without ever stepping into cringeworthy territory. Leon’s pencils do a wonderful job of bringing these characters to life, making every page look gorgeous.
If you’ve ever wanted to get into the Power Pack, this comic is a great place to start and if you’re a longtime fan of the series, this mini does the characters justice. It may just be the most wholesome book on the market right now.
