[Tribeca ’21] ‘David’ review: Familiar faces come together for silly short

Dealing with The Hoagie.

David is a short making its online world premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival. The film is about a man named David (William Jackson Harper) who is looking for help from his therapist. David (Fred Hechinger) is also look for the same doctor. What follows is a frantic scene that tests the limits of all three people.

The short does a great job of keeping audiences guessing the entire time. The story is straight and to the point, but it is hard to tell what direction it is going to go in. As things escalate and become more silly, it is clear David is very much a short that deals in the now. Much like a skit on Saturday Night Live, it deals with what is happening in the moment. The is not a story with a deep message.

This is not a bad thing. There seems to have been a dearth of films that just want to have fun. Considering the state of the world, this makes a lot of sense. There are a lot of stories that need to be told and lots of voices that need to be heard. This also means that it is greatly appreciated when there is just a few minutes to turn off the outside world and have some pointless chuckles.

The Tribeca Film Festival takes place from June 9 – June 20
