Channel Surfing: Awesome TV picks for the week of 06/21/2021

A pair of witch dramas and an animated comedy.

Our Channel Surfing TV picks this week include a pair of witch dramas and an animated comedy. Get ready for more magical military training in the new season of Motherland: Fort Salem. Catch up with the musical stylings of the Tillermans and the rest of the crew of Central Park. Finally, visit the supernatural side of Elizabethan London in A Discovery of Witches.

A Darker Threat on the Horizon

In Motherland: Fort Salem, instead of persecuting the women at the Salem witch trials, the U.S. government formed an agreement with them and enlisted these supernatural powered individuals into the army. Flashforward to today and the so-called Salem Accord is still in effect and the series follows three young witches, Raelle, Abigail, and Tally, who are enlisted in the army and train in combat magic.

Season two of the supernatural drama is set to return this week and it continues the military instruction of the trio and the overall conflict with the terrorist organization, the Spree, a group consisting of witches that don’t agree with the conscription of their sisters. However, an ancient society of witch hunters, the Camarilla, emerge from the shadows and the army and the Spree must work together to defeat this new threat.

The second season of Motherland: Fort Salem begins Tuesday, June 22, on Freeform.

Central to Your Heart

Another show debuting its sophomore season this week is the charming animated musical comedy, Central Park. The Tillerman family manage more antics within and involving the titular location all the while thwarting Bitsy Brandenham and her attempts to take over the iconic park.

One of the highlights of the series so far are the eclectic guest songwriters from various genres cranking out the most infectious of tunes. The likes of Sara Bareilles, Cyndi Lauper, and Anthony Hamilton have all lent their talent to Central Park. Will they go bigger and better this season? We’ll have to watch to find out.

The first three episodes of season two drop this Friday, June 25, on Apple TV+.

Timewalkin’

Deborah Harkness’ All Souls Trilogy was adapted for the small screen and took the title of the first book, A Discovery of Witches. The story is about a college professor named Diana who discovers an ancient manuscript that powerful people have been looking for. In order to survive, she must reconnect with her witch roots and team with a vampire named Matthew.

When we last left the show, Diana and Matthew prepare to timewalk in order to hide from the Congregation and by some time until Diana can master her powers. In the upcoming season, the pair end up in Elizabethan London and search for a witch to help train Diana and also the Book of Life.

Though the entire second season has already streamed on AMC+, the linear premiere of A Discovery of Witches season two is Sunday, June 27, on AMC.
