On Tuesday, Amazon sent out a press release that their highly anticipated (and highly expensive) Lord of the Rings prequel series will premiere September 2, 2022 on Amazon Prime Video. They also gave us our image from the show, which Entertainment Weekly confirmed is from the first episode.
I won’t pretend to know what city that is or the white cloaked figure’s identity, but that’s an absolutely gorgeous shot.
Although no official title has been revealed, it’s worth noting that the url from Amazon’s press release denotes it as Lord of the Rings: Origins (which is hopefully just a placeholder).
Whatever the name ends up being, the series will take place during Middle Earth’s Second Age, which is thousands of years before the events of the The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings. The wait for September 2 of next year might feel just as long, but today’s announcement should also signal the beginning of more news about the series as we inch closer to its release date.
