[Fantasia ’21] ‘Hayop Ka! The Nimfa Dimaano Story’ review: Adult animated film from the Philippines is raunchy fun

Son of a bitch!

Hayop Ka! The Nimfa Dimaano Story is an animated movie out of the Philippines playing at the Fantasia Film Festival. The film follows the exploits of anthropomorphic animals in a sexually charged romantic comedy. Nimfa is a feline who works as a perfume salesperson. Her boyfriend Roger is a janitor who has recently proposed to her. When she meets a wealthy dog named Inigo, she finds herself in a love triangle.

Despite its cute animated characters, the film is decidedly for adults. The early moments see sexual innuendos followed by an actual sex scene. It is easy to believe that Hayop Ka! will rely on shock value. This is far from the truth. The movie is definitely filled with vulgar humor, but this is all part of the larger story. Hayop Ka! obviously deals with relationships and the class divide, but issues like pregnancy factor into the story. It is a wild mix that is fun to watch.

That being said, the film is a comedy first. It may touch on heavy themes, but it is all about making its audience laugh. The jokes range from crude sexually laced jokes to the stuff of romantic comedies. Hayop Ka! was in production for three years and it shows. The animation may seem simple, but it is filled with vibrant colors and well defined characters. The settings are also well done and add to the film. The animation is constantly changing up, making sure things never get stale.

It is always refreshing to see a movie take risks. Even the ones that do not work can be interesting to watch. Hayop Ka! The Nimfa Dimaano Story has its influences in telenovelas and sleazy late night talk shows. It is an odd mix that comes together in an outrageous watch. Just make sure to tuck the kids to bed beforehand.

The Fantasia Film Festival takes place in person and online from August 5 – August 25
