Jonathan Hickman outlines Substack plans for ‘Three Worlds Three Moons’

Hickman aims to solve problems like bringing surprise back to comics and using digital comics to unlock static storytelling.

Earlier today, James Tynion IV revealed he’s moving away from superhero comics to devote that time to Substack, and the Head of X himself Jonathan Hickman is also joining the service. Revealed via his Substack at around 12:50 today,  Hickman revealed his plan to publish comics via the Substack subscription service was in part due to the pandemic.

Back in April, Diamond Comics Distributors halted the shipment of comics, which put a stop to all of comics. That included Jonathan Hickman’s X-Men line, and in response, Hickman revealed today he had written up an X-line digital plan. Due to Diamond and the market recovering that plan didn’t come to fruition, but it’s now being implemented in some way via his Substack.

Hickman detailed what problems he aims to solve:

The two biggest problems with the way we make comics now are: 1.) Because of the solicit/previews/pre-order hierarchy we’ve systemically erased surprise from the industry, and… 2.) We’re locked into a static storytelling format based entirely on an existing economic model.

Fans can subscribe now to his Substack, which costs $8/month, or $80/year. The Founding Member tier will run you $250 but will come with as yet undisclosed bonuses and extras.

Joining Jonathan Hickman are artists Mike Del Mundo and Mike Huddleston and writers Al Ewing, Tini Howard, and Ram V. Dubbed, THREE WORLDS THREE MOONS, the creators are aiming to world build and develop a concept universe. Using a metaphor of a jam band, the project will be like a concept album, “where all of the individual characters/stories/things we create together add up to be part a much larger whole.”
