‘Team Meryland’ review: Inspirational tale most will relate to

A great story.

The recently concluded Summer Olympics were a reminder of the passion and drive needed to compete on the world stage. They also gave the world tales filled with pride and joy. Team Meryland is a short film that follows a 12 year old boxer that dreams of competing at the 2024 Games. The film is an inspirational story that goes beyond the Olympics.

Meryland has faced many difficulties.

The documentary picks up with Meryland Gonzalez training for the 2019 Junior Olympics. Team Meryland does a great job of displaying how intense fights are. The young boxer differs from her opponents due a life-threatening illness she suffered as a youth. Her whole life has been a series of questions. Nowhere is this more clear than when Meryland and the audience wait on the judges scorecards.

It is not just Meryland has faced difficulties. Her family immigrated to the United States from Mexico. The short touches on some of the challenges the family faced. Things did not immediately get better when they arrived. They still had to fight for their daughter’s life. Ultimately, what makes Team Meryland so good is how relatable it is. While everyone will not be able to understand specific details, they will be able to relate to the sense of family and dreaming big. It is a refreshing story in today’s often dark world.
