‘Skinwalker: The Howl of the Rougarou’ review: In search of a rarely heard about cyptid

Well researched and plenty of lore.

Skinwalker: The Howl of the Rougarou will make some worry. After yet another release from Small Town Monsters and Seth Breedlove, it is only natural to wonder if this a case of quality over quantity. It is not long before any fears are pushed to the side. The STM crew put their expertise to use in this new urban legend. Their latest film is another find add to their ever expanding library.

As expected, there are plenty of interviews. These serve two purposes: they provide lore for the cryptid and they also add atmosphere to Skinwalker. The documentary takes audiences to the bayous of Louisiana and the people interviewed add to the feeling. Skinwalker is a well researched film. This is important for viewers like myself who have no previous knowledge of the Rougarou. Breedlove does an excellent job of mixing the history of the region with legends about the creature. It means even those unfamiliar with the legend will be able to easily follow.

The easiest way to judge a documentary about cryptids is by how much it will appeal to skeptics. A person who already believes in werewolves is an easy sell. The real challenge is to entertain someone who goes in doubting everything they hear. This may be where Skinwalker stands out most. The trademark stock footage and animation is here. There is also nice tension built. It is hard to know whether a person what a person will believe when the film is over, but Breedlove ensures that at least they will listen.

As with most releases from STM, finding the truth is only part of what Skinwalker is trying to do. It is as much about legends and what they mean in culture. It is a point of view similar documentaries do not take and what makes this documentary stand out. Breedlove and crew are not out to convince anyone of anything, they are telling stories about the past.
