‘Creepshow’ season 3 episode 2 review: ‘Skeletons in the Closet’/’Familiar’

What did you notice?

Creepshow’s second episode of its latest season is everything the series is known for. It is scary, funny, and self-aware. The show is an upgrade from the season premiere. “Skeletons In the Closet” is one of the funnier segments in quite a while. Horror fans will love the constant references. The obvious ones are there, but there is a treasure trove of them hidden in the background. This plays to the modern love of looking for Easter eggs.

The story itself is also fun. The plot is about the owner of a movie memorabilia shop. When a fellow collector threatens to tell his secret, things escalate to a deadly degree. The best parts are listening to the two rivals compare their collections. It is a game of one-upmanship that only the two involved care about. It is a short scene that will be familiar to anyone who has visited an online forum or been to a con.

Everything culminates in a delightfully silly ending. Creepshow has always been about watching people get their comeuppance. This story has a nice twist on the formula. While there is a sense that the show has not taught the twisted lesson the franchise is famous for, it is laugh out loud funny. It is also nice to see the show deviate from a style it has perfected.

“Familiar” is funny in its own right, but it focuses more on the scares. Jackson is a soon to be lawyer who is being followed by a familiar. His decision to try to capture it leads to a startling discovery. The story is reminiscent of “The Crate” from the original movie. While there are some similarities, this is a whole new story. After a nice build, the story rushes to an abrupt ending, however.

The second episode of Creepshow includes the best segment of the short season. (A strong argument can be made it is one of the best of the three seasons.) The second tale is an enjoyable one despite its lackluster conclusion. Fans of the show will be glad to see the improvement from last week.

New episodes of Creepshow premiere on Shudder each Thursday
