‘One Shot’ review: When style over substance works

Best Call of Duty movie ever?

One Shot sounds like it is going all in on its gimmick. It is hard to argue a movie is not aiming for style over substance when the title literally describes how the film was shot. Even the premise is by the book. In an effort to prevent a terrorist attack on Washington D.C., a group of Navy SEALs is tasked to retrieve a prisoner. Things go awry when the black site prison is attacked.

Unsurprisingly, things never get over complicated. There are some differences in opinions leading to some arguments, but nothing that will stay with audiences. One Shot is focused on its visual style and its combat scenes. Some will say that One Shot is little more than one extended gunfight. While there is some truth to that, labeling the film to just one ongoing action sequence would not be doing it justice. There is an excitement that never gets lost and the chaos of the situation is conveyed perfectly.

The story is even able to inject a little tension into its formulaic plot. Perhaps more unexpectedly, this is done outside of the firefights. One Shot has some nice mysteries simmering the entire time. This keeps things from becoming too stale. The few dramatic sequences included are well done. They are far too reminiscent of video game cutscenes, but they help propel things forward.

'One Shot' review: When style over substance works

Overall, One Shot is a very enjoyable action movie. The way the film changes points of view is cleverly done and the shootouts are nicely choreographed. The action is non stop ensuring things never get boring and unnecessary exposition is kept to a minimum. There is a lack of emotion and things just kind of end, but it is worth a watch.

One Shot comes to theaters and on demand November 5
