‘Tacoma FD’ season 3 episode 10 review: Amusing parody of prime time firefighter soaps

On Tacoma FD, Eddie’s exes come back to haunt him.

On Tacoma FD, we know that the captain can be quite the lady’s man. That’s why he’s Eddie Penisi. When he looks to earn a considerable profit from selling his home, some of his old flames pop up complicating his plans.

There’s a bevy of night time firefighter soaps including Chicago Fire and Station 19. “Eddie’s Exes” parodies the melodrama and a look back at his ex-wives is a perfect vehicle for it. The whole conflict is spurred by the death of his divorce lawyer who was never officially licensed. Thus, the status of the previous marriages and divorces are up in the air.

It’s a silly premise with over-the-top turns as the story progresses. Tacoma FD takes everything tongue-in-cheek and are in on the joke. Different crew members sit and watch snacking on popcorn while the drama unfolds. Eddie’s previous partners are a colorful bunch from a wiccan to a green card bride to a big box retailer heiress.

There are some amusing callbacks to unfortunate events from the past and the running gag of different curses. Although the one-upmanship with reveals does get a little tiresome near the end and the show does acknowledge it. By the time Eddie’s fourth wife pops up she’s treated as an afterthought.

The subplot is a pleasant distraction from the main story with a riff on the whole Peloton craze. Sometimes the virtual trainers come off as charming and sexy and Granny, Ike, and Andy end up enamored with theirs, Anita Firm.

A fierce rivalry develops between them as they compete for a special one on one personal session. The childish ways they find to sabotage each other are entertaining not to mention the ridiculous outfits they wear. It’s all for naught because life can be cruel unless your name is Eddie Penisi.

“Eddie’s Exes” pokes a lot of fun at the prime time firefighter broadcast dramas and the virtual home trainer craze with an absurd tale spotlighting the highs and lows of being the captain.

New episodes of Tacoma FD air Thursday nights on truTV.

The tongue-in-cheek melodrama.
Granny, Ike, and Andy's antics for their virtual trainer's affections.
Even the show realizes it takes the joke and drama too far.
