Fantastic Five: The best comics of the week of December 1, 2021

The best comics of the week that lead us into December.

Happy December, everyone! It’s hard to believe we got through 2020, let alone that 2021 is already coming to a close, but time marches on. And thankfully it does, as this week was a big one for comic books! This week’s Fantastic Five, as it does every week, calls out and celebrates the five highest-rated comics of the week here at AIPT. Let’s check ’em out!

Daredevil #36

Daredevil‘s finale issue is a perfect ending for this current volume of Daredevil. There was intense drama, romance, rejection, and character growth. Zdarsky and the team have taken these characters and lifted them to excellent levels. The issue has me impatiently waiting for the Devil’s Reign event to continue this roller coaster of emotions and entertainment!

Gotham City Villains Anniversary Giant #1

Gotham City Villains Anniversary Giant is a great anthology that celebrates the good, the bad, and the evil of some of Batman’s greatest villains. This read feels important thanks to the ties to current stories along with icon Danny DeVito supplying one story. This is a reminder Batman’s villains are exhilarating, real, and inventive in the right hands.

Once & Future #22

Mora, Bonvillain, and Gillen continue to be one of the most joyously reliable creative teams in comics. Once & Future‘s 22nd issue has elements that give me pause, but hot diggity the craft and construction and energy this book has. A toast to issue #22, and here’s to issue #23.

‘Once & Future’ #22 has spectacular narrative construction (and a fire-breathing lion)

Wonder Woman Historia: The Amazons #1

Between the art and story, this book is going to light a fire in your imagination. It can feel incomprehensible and confusing at times, but that’s kind of the point as we witness inconceivable meetings between gods with impossible powers. Wonder Woman Historia: The Amazons is an intellectual feast for the eyes that challenges the senses and the very idea of gods in comics.

‘Wonder Woman Historia: The Amazons’ #1 is an awe-inducing epic

Action Comics #1037

Once again, Action Comics #1037 lives up to its name with tons of action, sci-fi supervillains, and Superman intrigue. There are also political elements at work here, showing how this isn’t a simple fistfight, but a war that spans planets. Add in a good start to a Martian Manhunter backup and you have an issue that’ll keep you entertained and thirsty for more.

‘Action Comics’ #1037 satisfies with impressive sci-fi fights
