‘Stone Cold’ Steve Austin reportedly close to comeback match

What?!

One of the biggest names in the history of professional wrestling may be returning to the squared circle for one more match, as Fightful has reported that WWE has “made an overture” to get “Stone Cold” Steve Austin to wrestle a match at this year’s WrestleMania. Currently, it sounds as though WWE is trying to get to Austin vs. Kevin Owens in Dallas.

Wrestling Observer’s Dave Meltzer added to the rumor, saying that he gets the impression the match will happen.

If there were ever a time to do it, it’d be now: While he appears to be in great shape, Austin is 57 and not getting any younger. However, modern medicine has allowed wrestlers far past their supposed primes to continue to compete — Edge, Goldberg, Brock Lesnar, and Rey Mysterio are some of the biggest names in WWE right now, and AEW employs two wrestlers once thought retired for good in Christian Cage and Bryan Danielson. Also, this year’s WrestleMania is in Dallas, Texas, and there’d be no easier way to sell out AT&T Stadium than by putting the Texas Rattlesnake on the marquee.

Austin has balked at the notion of returning to the ring several times over the years, including all the way back in 2010 when WWE seemed to be teasing the possibility of “Stone Cold” Steve Austin vs. CM Punk. Now, twelve years later, it may be close to actually happening, this time against Owens.

It would almost assuredly be a dream come true for Owens, who grew up watching “Stone Cold”, has seen him as a mentor over the years and even uses his Stunner as his finishing maneuver.

If Austin does decide to wrestle again, it will be his first match in 19 years. His last match was a classic against The Rock at WrestleMania XIX on March 30, 2003.
