For our Channel Surfing TV picks this week, we bring you an animated adult comedy, Star Trek, and some horror. A former child prodigy solves teen mysteries in the place he grew up in Dicktown. Travel back in time with a fan favorite captain in Star Trek: Picard. Then, a haunted house might be able to solve some writer’s block in Shining Vale.
If Encyclopedia Brown Grew Old
Dicktown first got its start on the anthology series, Cake, during its third season. These shorts were also collected and released on Hulu. The reception was good enough that it returns as its own standalone show on FXX consisting of two segments per half hour episode.
The story follows John Hunchman, who was once a famous child detective in his hometown of Richardsville, North Carolina. Apparently, he peaked too early and now in his 40s, John is still solving mysteries for teens alongside his old bully turned assistant, David Purefoy. Creators John Hodgman and David Rees star as Hunchman and Purefoy respectively.
Dicktown premieres this Thursday, March 3, on FXX.
Fixing Reality and Time
Star Trek: Picard returns for an all-new season. The now admiral and his crew find themselves transported to the past in an alternative history. Now they are tasked with solving and repairing the divergence in order to save the future.
Like the first season, we’ll be seeing a few familiar faces. John De Lancie reprises his role as Q, who is responsible for the disruption in reality. In order to better understand the situation, Picard seeks out Whoopi Goldberg’s Guinan while in the 21st century. The Borg Queen will also play a role but this time the character is played by Annie Wersching.
The second season of Star Trek: Picard begins Thursday, March 3, on Paramount+
Possessed or Depressed?
In Shining Vale, Courteney Cox plays Patricia “Pat” Phelps, a best-selling writer known for her raunchy female empowerment novels. She finds herself at a precarious time in her life where her kids can’t stand her, she is unfulfilled in her marriage, and she can’t quite find the motivation to write her next book.
Things begin to turn for Pat when she and the family move from the big city to a small town into a house with a sinister past. The spirit that haunts her home might not be good for her mental health or sobriety but sure is helping her overcome the writer’s block.
Shining Vale premieres Sunday, March 6, on Starz.
