Just for the record, I am not anti-Madea. I actually really enjoyed Boo! A Madea Halloween. It was actually pretty funny and the film’s story was kept simple and didn’t have a whole bunch of poorly acted family melodrama.
I expected this new Madea film to be bad since the past couple have been and I wasn’t wrong. I wish the quality of the first Boo film had continued but unfortunately Boo 2, A Madea Family Funeral, and now A Madea Homecoming are all pretty abysmal. These films are supposed to be laugh out loud funny but they’ve become stale, awkward, and just lame.
It’s difficult to understand why Tyler Perry wants to keep doing these films after being in projects such as Gone Girl, Vice, and Don’t Look Up. If these films were actually funny then I could see continuing to do them but they simply aren’t. I mildly chuckled twice during A Madea Homecoming. They attempt to be shocking and outrageous but it mostly comes across as desperate and scattered.
I love a well written raunchy comedy but A Madea Homecoming plays like a chicken running around with its head cut off. I would be very surprised to hear if anyone is really satisfied with the comedy in this. In any comedic film or TV show you hope that the bad jokes come far and few in between and you also hope they are short. In this not only do they come up often but they keep on going forever as if they are hilarious.
The other glaring problem that is just cringe inducing is the heavy dose of poorly acted family melodrama. I know that these films always come with a certain amount of that, but Lord have mercy it seems to keep getting worse. None of it rings true or has any impact at all.
These kind of films don’t need all this schlocky drama. If there’s going to be any sort of content like that, it needs to be minimal. And let’s be honest, audiences don’t want to see that in a wild comedy series like this. I would think folks want constant belly laughs in something like this, not sappy uninteresting family fights.
I do appreciate that at least one of the details amongst all the drama is a family coming out story. Positive LGBT representation is always something to praise. But other than that, it’s all very pedestrian. On top of that, they try to drag social issues and current events into the comedy and you’d think that could lead to some fresh comedic material but it’s no different from the rest.
I really wish A Madea Homecoming and the last couple films had actually been satisfying because I want to like these films. Sometimes you need an outrageous comedy to just unwind and have a good time. Unfortunately, these films have just become nearly unwatchable. I hope Perry either quits these films or improves the material.
Tyler Perry’s A Madea Homecoming is a complete flop. There’s nothing here to enjoy or even laugh at. It’s a shame but I highly recommend skipping this one.
