Jethica is a minimalist horror movie about a woman named Jessica (Ashley Denise Robinson) who is trying to get away from a stalker. After running into her high school friend Elena (Callie Hernandez) she reveals more about the person following her. Named Kevin, there seems to be no escape from him.The two decide they are going to put an end to the problem once and for all.
Things get off to a hot and heavy start before slowing down considerably. Jethica is filled with long panning shots and little action. This would not be so bad if anything of value was added, but it always feels like filler. It is hard to figure out what type of story is being told. On one hand, it seems like a story of female empowerment and independence, but it is Kevin that gets the most dialogue and personality. It is not positive, but it is more than is given either of the female characters. The movie has some laughs, but does not feel like a comedy and the horror elements never make it seem suspenseful or scary.
Ultimately, this is the best way to describe Jethica; a bunch of interesting ideas that never fully form. The idea of women coming together to take on their stalkers is interesting and the dry humor works. However, neither is fully developed leaving the audience more confused than anything else. Is this a serious commentary on modern life or is it a comedy horror that just wants to treat the audience to a good time?
