Holy Heist tells the remarkable tale of a bank robbery that sounds like it is straight out of Hollywood. In 1993, a crooked cop, an Irish rebel, a famous boxer, and a priest (even the premise begins like a joke) became involved in one of America’s largest armored car robberies. The documentary covers the not so funny true story that involves millions of dollars, international terrorism, and murder.
As the story evolves, it becomes more outrageous. The film is filled with interviews that capture how odd and colorful the characters involved are. Holy Heist is a true crime story, but it is the characters that take center stage. There is never a time when the group fill like heroes, but there is a certain charm to them. This makes the already wild story that much interesting to watch.
Perhaps the highlight of Holy Heist is an interview with Father Patrick Moloney. During the frank conversation, Moloney discusses his involvement in the operation. Like any master storyteller, he pulls the audience in. He always seems to be walking the line between reality and fiction making his comments all the more interesting. An air of truth being stranger than fiction permeates the entire film and Moloney is the culmination of it all.
Of course, any crime that involves over $7 million is going to be interesting. Bank heist stories are inherently fascinating and this one is no different. Again, it sounds like a movie that is too derivative. A member of the IRA, a suspiciously easy robbery that seemed like an inside operation are just part of the plan. There are also some twists that will keep things entertaining.
Holy Heist is now on streaming on Discovery+
