‘Titanic 666’ review: Ship of fools

Unwilling to leave.

Titanic 666 begins with a nod to James Cameron’s 1997 epic. There are some slight differences, but even those who have not seen Titanic will get the gist of it. Flash forward one hundred and ten years and the Titanic III is about to set sail on its maiden voyage. Anyone who takes an Asylum produced film too seriously is going about things the wrong way. This is the studio responsible for tie-ins such as Triassic World and Planet Dune, after all. Instead, these movies are more about having fun than delivering a deep message.

Titanic 666 plays its role perfectly, as it is basically a supernatural disaster movie that pays lip service to themes like greed and the value of memories. The creature effects are surprisingly well done. Though there are some odd decisions regarding jump cuts and a noted lack of movement, they look really good. There is also some well used gore in the movie. Since there is not a lot, each time is very effective. (In an odd trend, almost all of the kills involve the neck area of the victims. It is a kill fetish that means nothing and was done for no reason, but does stick out.) The one exception is a hilarious death involving a lifeboat.

Not all of the fun in Titanic 666 is intentional. From accents to character motivations, it is incredibly inconsistent. It is impossible to know what any character is going to do from one scene to the next and the redemption arc lacks any impact. The closest the movie has to a well rounded character is Captain Celeste Rhodes (Keesha Sharp) and even her biggest motivation seems to be showing off her wedding ring.

Ultimately, the film lives up to its title. It takes place on a ship known as the Titanic and there are dark forces at play. The ghosts look great while the decapitations and throat slashings do not wear out their welcome. Titanic 666 is definitely flawed, but it is harmless fun.
