It’s been a few months since a solo Captain America series hit the stands, but the wait was worth it as Marvel embarks on not one but two new series. One series focused on Sam Wilson and another on Steve Rogers will sprout from Captain America #0 out this week. Both heroes are featured in this one-shot-style adventure bringing action and patriotism together in a hopeful new direction for the characters.
As the preview shows, both Captain Americas are fighting against Arnim Zola. He hopes to send a rocket into space that’ll augment all of humanity into “perfected Zolasauruses.” Luckily Sam and Steve are nearby to board the rocket and stop Zola before he can do any harm.
Co-written by Tochi Onyebuchi, Collin Kelly, and Jackson Lanzing, this is a highly entertaining action-frenzied issue that shows both Caps are equally impressive. A running gag of sorts is how they are both the same but also different. Which one deserves the mantle of Captain America? There are some comedic elements that play into this to show both heroes are cool sharing the name.
This writing team pulls off creative ways to face Zola on a single rocket. Each time they face him he looks different and there are different goals to accomplish. This book is never boring as it seems to find a new gear and higher stakes as the story pushes on.

Mattia de Iulis is largely why this issue is never boring. De Iulis draws and colors the issue to perfection. The style is hyper-realistic with great lighting and tons of detail. Look closely at the Cap shield and you’ll see scratches and wear. The play of light is great too with different colored lighting distinguishing between different areas. Zola’s multiple forms also look great and are super creative. Randomly open any page and you’ll be stunned at what you see.
The only element that doesn’t work is how this story doesn’t set up the two series spinning out of it. There’s some handy teaser text to help readers understand what Steve and Sam’s series will be about, but the story itself only gives you a taste of who these men are. If the goal of this issue was to show Steve and Sam are similarly heroic and even finishing each other’s sentences it succeeds, but it would be nice to know why we’re getting two new titles or what they’ll be about.
Captain America #0 is a gorgeous action-adventure that can be enjoyed by anyone. It’s funny, never boring, and a good glimpse at what makes Sam and Steve the greatest Captain Americas ever.
