We Are the Thousand is a documentary that allows audiences to step away from stories about true crime or someone’s downfall. Set in Cesena, Italy, the movie is about a man named Fabio Zaffagnini whose goal is to have the Foo Fighters play in his small Italian village. His plan is to get 1,000 musicians to play “Learning to Fly” in order to convince Dave Grohl stop by.
Filmmaker Anita Rivaroli takes the audience through the entire journey. From the submission process to the awful first rehearsal to their final take, We Are the Thousand does a great job of capturing everything. The film is more than just a simple behind the scenes look, however. It is filled with a passion and chaos not always captured in these types of documentaries.
We Are the Thousand wisely steps back for the standard talking heads format. It has interviews – it is almost impossible to have a music doc without them – but they tend to add feeling as opposed to just providing background. The Rockin’ 1000, as they come to call themselves, is an eclectic group that truly were doing something special. These are some of the most heartwarming parts of the film.
When everything comes together and the Foo Fighters do come to Cesena it is a touching moment. The Rockin’ 1000 have accomplished their goal and have nothing left to prove. The emotion comes through the camera. What happens next adds to the feel good vibe of it all. We Are the Thousand is a refreshing documentary that everyone can enjoy watching.
We Are the Thousand comes to theaters and digital platforms June 3
