[Tribeca ’22] Skylar Benton on ‘Girls Night In’ and ‘the acting thing’

A little too on the nose.

Girls Night In is a comedy horror playing at Tribeca that is based on the Bechdel Test. The test is a rather simple one that is used to locate a specific trend in fiction. It requires at least two women who speak to each other. The test is to see whether they will talk about something other than a man. It is one that movies and television often fail. This short takes it to the next level.

Becca (Jess Adams) and Delaney (Skylar Benton) are two friends who are going to hang out and enjoy some pizza. It seems like it is going to be just a fun girls night in. Before long, a masked intruder arrives with weapon in hand. As the two barricade themselves and call the police, an important question is asked. Just who is the killer really interested in?

Girls Night In is a silly short that has great chemistry. Benton likened it to “working with your friends.” This comes through as Becca and Delaney have an excellent rapport that comes naturally. This was something that was not manufactured as Benton has known Adams for years. The climax is especially well done and leads to the film’s funniest moments.

The short – and in turn, Benton – has received plenty of buzz as it tours the festival circuit. Benton, who has also performed on stage throughout the world, loves the “instant gratification” of doing a live show. Her strong showing in Girls Night In is a highlight and is a promising debut. Benton mentioned as much as she loves dancing, she would love to “try out the acting thing.”

The Tribeca Film Festival takes place from June 8 – June 19. Full lineup, passes, and tickets can be found HERE
