‘Wolverine’ #22 is a high-octane thrill ride

Deadpool is in for a world of hurt in ‘Wolverine’ #22.

Wolverine has become the Deadpool show in Benjamin Percy and Adam Kubert’s latest story arc on the series. I mean that quite literally in many respects, as Deadpool has even taken over the data pages and credits page too. It seems his influence has made Wolverine’s life a lot worse, though, and in the latest issue, they’re stuck in jail. Leave it to Deadpool to ruin Wolverine’s day even when he’s tried to ignore him every step of the way!

Percy and Kubert have pulled something off in this arc I didn’t expect, which is to make the reader actually want Deadpool to suffer. He’s been insatiable and annoying for multiple issues, so when Logan stabs his brain in the opening scene you kind of think he deserved it. It helps, of course, that Deadpool can heal from any wound.

As this latest issue goes, it’s a rollicking action-packed adventure. We’re talking prison breaks, car chases, and even a fight on a Las Vegas stage. This issue in particular leans into the maiming of Deadpool for comedic relief. It works in every instance, increasing the entertainment value. Nobody said it’s a high brow type of book, but when we’re reading a comic with Deadpool, when is it ever?

This issue also moves the plot along nicely. We get more information about Danger and the cliffhanger is titillating as well. To see our heroes in a classic location now that Krakoa has taken over the X-Men’s life is quite cool.

Kubert’s art continues to play around with layout as seen in the preview. He uses framing to create a page that’s almost like a symmetrical stained glass window. Every page has a different layout design like one where panels break up a chase across a stage over a double page layout, or Wolverine flung from a windshield and a giant outdoor pull framing him as he dives at Maverick. Throw in an excellent cliffhanger full-page spread that’s in high detail and it’s a satisfying-looking issue.

I won’t argue that this story arc hasn’t felt drawn out and a bit blah at times, but Wolverine #22 is a lot of fun. It recovers from the last issue which was slow and throws the reader into a high-speed chase. More importantly, it punishes Deadpool for being such a dingus which brings a lot of comic relief.
