Current artist of the new New Mutants run, Rod Reis, joins the show! His work alongside Vita Ayala is truly inspiring. For his debut on X-Reads he selects The New Mutants #18 (Vol 1) – and we all gush about the incredible Demon Bear Saga drawn by Bill Sienkiewicz and written by Chris Claremont. Rod is a Brazilian comic book artist and colorist who started his career in the mid-’90s as an illustrator, doing lots of arts for RPG Magazines such as Dragão Magazine and Tormeta, both Fantasy RPG Magazines. He is also passionate for ’80s retro music and style.
X-Reads:An X-Men Experience
The New Mutants #18 was published in August 1984. That same month:
- Top film at the time: Tightrope
- Top song at the time: “Ghostbusters” by Ray Parker Jr.
- Ghostbusters was killing it in the box office too but it opened in June of 1984, and it took until August for the song to beat out “When Doves Cry” by Prince In fact, Prince’s “Purple Rain” reached #1 in the charts and stayed there for 24 weeks!
