Writer Robert Venditti revealed via Twitter he’s working on a sequel to Superman ’78. A sequel hasn’t yet been officially announced, but Venditti pointed out the cat was out of the bag via his bio in the Superman ’78 hardcover released this week.
If you’re unfamiliar, Superman ’78, much like Batman ’89, is one of the most no-brainer film adaptation comics I could think of. As AIPT’s Nathan Simmons put it in his review of the first issue: Why not revisit this version of Superman and get new stories with this colorful and optimistic cast of characters. In many ways, the original film series displayed so much untapped potential when it came to depicting the rich tapestry of Superman lore on the big screen. Plans to introduce characters such as Mr. Mxyzptlk and Brainiac were swept to the side in favor of Gus Gorman and Nuclear Man (of course, I’d be lying if I said I didn’t adore Richard Pryor’s performance in Superman III. The script isn’t his fault). With Superman ’78, we finally see what it might have been like for Christopher Reeve’s Last Son of Krypton to go up against one of the comics’ greatest rogues. This ultimately works for and against the first issue.
Here’s the bio Venditti is referring to:
It’s unclear who will be drawing the book, but if they can get the band back together with artist Wilfredo Torres, we’ll be in for quite a treat of a sequel.
