[Fantasia ’22] ‘The Breach’ review: Methodical & over the top horror

Spineless bastards.

The Breach is a methodical Lovecraftian horror movie based on an Audible original by Nick Cutter making its world premiere at the Fantasia Film Festival. Things start with a grisly discovery down by a river. Chief of police John Hawkins (Allan Hawco) is brought in to investigate the case. As more secrets are revealed, Hawkins must deal with unimaginable horrors.

The prosthetics are spectacular and will end up being the most memorable part. From an autopsy early on to its chaotic climax, The Breach is disgustingly creative. The film rarely pulls back presenting eyeballs where they should not be and faces within faces. Things get very gory, but it is impossible to not be impressed by what is accomplished.

The characters are the standards expected from this type of story – Hawkins is joined by his ex and her surly former boyfriend. It leads to the expected tensions and infighting. The dialogue can get clunky at times, but the atmosphere does a great job covering for these moments.  The Breach has a disturbing tone that starts from the beginning and never goes away. There is a brief moment where it seems like the film is going to be more of a mystery, but even then there is an ominous feel. The tension only goes away when all hell breaks loose towards the end.

The Breach is an entertaining bit of horror that mixes familiar aspects of horror. A cabin in the woods thriller is a popular set up for most movie audiences and the haunted house elements will make it that much more appealing to a mainstream crowd. Once the make up kicks in, even those who do not care for scary movies will not be able to turn away – no matter how much they want to.
