HBO may be killing shows like they’re beloved characters in a GRR Martin story, but one series is definitely safe for next year. Following the first episode‘s monstrous ratings (HBO’s biggest premiere ever), House of the Dragon has already been renewed for a second season.

House of the Dragon (HBO)
This was pretty much a no-brainer, but it’s still good to know that the series won’t become yet another casualty of the merger between Warner Bros and Discovery. Also, if you’re worried about House of the Dragon concluding like Game of Thrones did (i.e. terribly), GRR Martin appears to be much more invested in this project than he is in finishing his A Song of Ice and Fire novels.
That said, there’s still one more volume of Targaryen history that’s supposed to be released (tentatively titled Blood & Fire) in the near future. It’s a safe bet that HBO executives are nervously awaiting word on when the manuscript makes it to the publisher.
In the meantime, we still have plenty of source material in Fire & Blood to get through. If the first episode is any indication, this adaption might just be good enough to make us forget about how Game of Thrones ended.
House of the Dragon airs Sundays at 9:00 PM on HBO.
