On Friday, Nellie Andreeva at Deadline.com reported that Netflix has canceled their series adaptation of Resident Evil after just one season.
The series was hit or miss with critics (we liked it), but was not embraced by many of the game franchise’s hardcore fans. A brief perusal of Resident Evil Facebook groups to a couple of key factors for their discontent.
First up was the “It’s not enough like the game!” complaint that plagues every video game adaptation. At some point, folks have to realize that movies/television and video games will never translate to each other on a one-to-one basis. They’re two distinct forms of entertainment that share many of the same aspects, but also require completely different things to work.
The other primary complaint I saw was a dislike of the storyline revolving around Jade Whesker as a teenager. I thought it was well done, but I can absolutely see how folks who wanted something more akin to the video game (or the adult Jade storyline) wouldn’t enjoy it.
Oh yeah…and then there’s this, which even an unabashed fan of the show like me can’t defend:
Here’s hoping that the next inevitable attempt at adapting the Resident Evil franchise into a streaming/television series manages to survive a bit longer.
