DCeased: War of the Undead Gods is an eight-issue miniseries, and the creative team is hitting it hard with the space they have. The last issue set up the drama, and this issue unleashes terror! Tom Taylor and Trevor Hairsine bring the chaos and action figure potential to DC Comics. When you read this issue, you’ll see a new level of fear, how the multiverse can give us the relationships we wanted and some unlikely allies. The New Gods are dead, and you better be afraid.
Starting with the art, Trevor Hairsine, Andy Lanning, and Rain Beredo are cultivating pure terror in outer space. Trevor has crafted some wild images that Andy sharpens up for Rain to splatter with color, making this a sight to behold. The fight scenes are unforgettable, bring about such awe, and will make you glad that this isn’t the main DCU. There is a character and power set mash-up in this issue that will have your jaw drop at the potential it brings; plus, McFarlane Toys needs to make an action figure of this thing.
This version of Supergirl unleashed will remind you how scary an Undead Kryptonian can be. Every time Supergirl was on the panel, I found myself worried for the characters near her; the art team gave her such potential for dread. Think back to the first time you watched Jaws, and how the shark made you feel about the water – this version of Supergirl gives a similar feeling. Also, look at the whole panel every time she is there, as there will be littering of death and destruction, which will have you wondering about your favorite characters.
Of course, I’d be remiss if I didn’t praise writer Tom Taylor as well, who did such an excellent job creating these scenarios. It has me worried that the Undead are smart. When you see what happens and take a moment after reading the issue, you might wonder if this was the Undead’s plan. I like that as it gives the Undead more depth than the standard bloodthirsty, flesh-hungry zombies. It feels like the Anti-Life Equation kills you and makes you the most horrifying version of yourself.
Tom Taylor has shown us before that he can make some great teams using all kinds of heroes from the DCU. If you don’t believe me, go back and reread DCeased: A Good Day to Die. In this issue, I feel like Tom wants to blur the lines and have good and bad guys working together. For example, look at the preview where you see Black Racer saving Big Barda. That is so wild as the Black Racer is dead, yet he is trying to save her from something else. I can’t wait to find out what is on the other side of that portal.
DCeased is such a dark and wonderful world to experience in the greater DC Universe. It is the stuff of nightmares and potential, which Tom Taylor and Trevor Hairsine are taking full advantage of. The DCU has great evil, but this version makes that one look docile. The creative team is bringing terror, so can the heroes bring hope?
