Beyond the safe confines of Bubble City in the Uninhabited Zone, Swamp Cop and his rookie partner Schitt continue to keep the mutant Uzzers at bay while they cause havoc. This time around the Uzzers have a gang of revolutionaries organising them, so Swamp Cop and Schitt’s work just got a lot more challenging. Justice Warriors continues its fantastic style, and brings laughs and action. As an AHOY book there are also extras in the form of prose and additional Matt Bors comics.
The Good
On the face of it, Justice Warriors is one of those comics that looks overtly silly. One of the two main characters has poo for a head and is called Schitt. But it’s really a testament to both the book itself as well as the creators that, once you’re a few pages in (or a few issues) things like that don’t really seem that out the ordinary. By that point you’re more concerned about what Swamp Cop and Schitt are doing and laughing at the jokes on the page.
This issue, more so than the others, features quite a bit of action. You find yourself reasonably gripped by this and go along with it, forgetting any of the absurdity about what’s happening. The character designs, on top of the plot itself, can be wild. Truly out there stuff. But you’ll be flipping through these pages to see if the protagonists survive. It’s not often that a book that’s unashamedly silly manages to also be this captivating.
AHOY is famous for its extras and this issue is no exception. One of the things that makes Justice Warriors stand out is the way the extras supplement the main story. When one of the creators is Matt Bors, it’s be a no-brainer to include one of his comics. In a sense, the book is like a nice meal from one of your favorite restaurants. After you’ve finished you think, “that was nice,” then you see the waiter bring out dessert. That’s not to mention the prose extra keeps people reading actual words.
The ‘Bad’
What is left to say at this point? By issue #4 you should know if Justice Warriors is for you or not. If you need a hint: it is.
