Things aren’t going so well for Los Espookys the business because everyone’s head and heart aren’t into it. Each member has their own drama that it’s difficult to balance work with their personal lives. In tonight’s episode, the group is further torn apart as they all get distracted from the job at hand.
Tati and Úrsula’s subplots satirize public education and politics. For the former, she backs into a lucrative business with her Don Quixote written audio novel. Schools are so financially strapped that the only versions of classics they can afford are hers. It’s difficult to say but which is funnier? That Tati stumbles into success again or that the situation is plausible considering the sad state of the school systems. Obviously, it wouldn’t be to this degree, but it wouldn’t be out of the question for them to purchase subpar textbooks.
Úrsula’s vow to take down the president on Los Espookys hits a speed bump during a debate. Mayor Teresa Lobos is far from an ideal candidate. Hell, she uses a child’s paper fortune teller to prepare and you can easily predict how big of a failure her performance is. Though the show takes place in Mexico, elections in the United States are less than a month away. Look at who is actually running and would it be that big of a stretch if someone like Lobos was a real candidate?
What’s more interesting is that these two storylines could be intersecting in the future. Tati’s books are having a brainwashing effect on the children. Could this be something used in a national election? Tati always ends up in crazy situations so becoming president wouldn’t be that big of a reach.
Andrés continues on his path of selfish behavior. Even when he’s found a pretty cushy situation, he manages to ruin it, and thankfully for the kids, it’s nothing too drastic. However, this role is perfect for him: the evil stepmother. There’s a little guilty pleasure watching him be so bad.
We finally receive a little progress with Renaldo’s haunted visions of the dead beauty queen we’ve seen throughout this season of Los Espookys. It even takes a more humorous turn when his porn viewing is taken over by the ghost. It’s nice that he’s trying to find himself but these uninvited intrusions lead him to finally check her grave. There’s now a bigger mystery afoot.
The one thing that didn’t work is Uncle Tico. Since he wasn’t a fit on the team, he’s kind of just around. The series is trying to find a way to keep its most recognizable face, Fred Armisen, involved for casual viewers but it seems forced. Also, he’s going out of his way to help his niece when taking care of himself or repairing his relationship to his daughter should be a higher priority. He wants to be a father figure to all these other people rather than to his own child.
The most recent Los Espookys has amusing but biting commentary on societal institutions while giving Andrés the perfect role and finally progressing Renaldo’s haunting storyline.
New episodes of Los Espookys drop Fridays on HBO.
