Channel Surfing: Awesome TV picks for the week of 10/17/2022

Our Channel Surfing TV picks include a Halloween anthology, a science fiction thriller, and an animated fantasy.

We have some fun selections for this week’s Channel Surfing TV picks. Catch a number of spooky shorts from talented creators across the world in The Paloni Show! Halloween Special!. The lines between reality and video games are blurred in The Peripheral. Finally, explore Japanese folklore in ONI: Thunder God’s Tale.

A Halloween Anthology

Justin Roiland is becoming a big name in adult animation. He is the co-creator of such hits as Rick and Morty and Solar Opposites, and is an executive producer on the upcoming Koala Man. Now it seems his misses are even being made for television.

Roiland initially pitched his mash up of family comedy and variety show, The Paloni Show! For Fox’s Animation Domination. It wasn’t picked up but has received a new life in the form of a holiday special. In The Paloni Show! Halloween Special!, siblings Leroy, Reggie, and Cheruce Paloni serve as the hosts who introduce a variety of spooky shorts from rising animation stars.

Stream The Paloni Show! Halloween Special! beginning today, October 17, on Hulu.

More Than a Game

The Peripheral boasts quite a pedigree for a new TV series. It is based off of the novel of the same name from William Gibson and is being developed by the creators of Westworld, Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy. Not to mention that it stars Chloë Grace Moretz in the leading role.

The story takes place in the near future where Flynne Fisher (Moretz) and her brother Burton (Jack Reynor) play paid simulations, or sims, in order for their family to make ends meet. When they are offered the opportunity to beta test the latest sim, Flynne uncovers a dark secret that could put them all in danger.

The series premiere of The Peripheral is Friday, October 21, on Prime Video.

Finding Your Power

We live in a golden age of television with so many options to watch due to streaming platforms, cable, and broadcast. With so much variety, there are even series that incorporate cultural aspects that help inclusion and normalization. In ONI: Thunder God’s Tale, we receive a bit of Japanese mythology.

A girl named Onari looks to follow in her mysterious father’s footsteps and, in the process, discovers her true powers. Her world consisting of eccentric gods and creatures from Japanese folklore is put at risk when a group of ONI, or demons, threaten her peaceful village. This stop-motion animated event will have plenty of whimsical adventure and charm.

Watch the first season of ONI: Thunder God’s Tale beginning Friday, October 21, on Netflix.
