Channel Surfing: Awesome TV picks for the week of 12/12/2022

Our Channel Surfing TV picks involve Afrofuturism, action adventure, and video games.

We have a very exciting selection for this week’s Channel Surfing TV picks. Octavia E. Butler’s popular novel Kindred receives an adaptation. Set out on another American historical adventure in National Treasure: Edge of History. Then, travel through parallel dimensions in Sonic Prime.

Caught Between Two Worlds

Octavia E. Butler is a respected author who has won multiple awards and recognitions including the Hugo and Nebula awards and a MacArthur Fellowship. She is known for combining science fiction with African American spiritualism. One of her best-selling novels, Kindred, is the basis of a new series.

The story follows a young black woman named Dana, who recently moves into a new home with her partner. She soon finds herself traveling back and forth between the modern day and the Antebellum South. During her experiences, she comes across her ancestors’ secrets.

Stream all episodes of Kindred beginning Tuesday, December 13, on FX on Hulu.

Searching for the Truth

The National Treasure franchise combines action adventure with American history. It’s an adrenaline rush unlocking the secrets of ancient relics and solving puzzles linked to famous landmarks. In the first two films, some of the more ridiculous plotlines include stealing the Declaration of Independence and kidnapping the President of the United States. Disney is hoping to continue that magic in the new show National Treasure: Edge of History.

Instead of Nicolas Cage’s Ben Gates, Lisette Olivera takes on the lead role as Jess Valenzuela. The character’s life is changed when a mysterious stranger provides a clue to a valuable treasure that has ties to Jess’s deceased father. She finds herself, along with her friends, in a hunt to find this treasure while also uncovering the truth behind her family’s past. They must be on the lookout though because a black-market antiquities dealer is hot on their trail.

The two episode premiere of National Treasure: Edge of History is Wednesday, October 14, on Disney+.

A Video Game Multiverse

Most of the buzz might be going to an awkwardly voiced Mario and his upcoming film, but you can’t forget his longtime rival at Sega, Sonic the Hedgehog. In his latest animated series, Sonic Prime, we see a side of the Blue Blur and his friends that we haven’t seen before.

During another of Sonic’s run-ins with Dr. Eggman, things get out of hand resulting in a literal universe shattering event. As our hero works to save the day, he must race through the Shatterverse and crosses paths with reinvented versions of his crew.

The entire first season of Sonic Prime will drop Thursday, December 15, on Netflix.
