Grasshoppers goes beyond its silly premise to explore deeper themes. Set in a Midwestern gated community, the story follows Nijm (Saleh Bakri) and Irina (Iva Gocheva). The pair wake up one morning to find all their snowbird neighbors have left for the weekend. They decide to ditch work and visit every empty house for a drink. What begins as innocent fun changes their lives forever.
The connection shared between the two becomes apparent quickly. They have the breezy way of communicating that only two people in love have. There is a sense of urgency yet nothing is rushed. Everything they say to each other is important. The couple are so believable thanks to the chemistry between Bakri and Gocheva. The two play off each other well as nothing seems scripted. Every romantic drama hinges on its two leads, and Grasshoppers has a strong foundation.
This is especially important since they are the only two in almost every scene. It is essentially up to them to carry the film. How much the viewer enjoys spending time with Nijm and Irina will determine what they think of the movie. Exposition heavy and light on action, Grasshoppers is a focused story that examines a relationship. There is a simple beauty to the production, with long shots that are a mix of urban sprawl and isolation built by class. All the while, the lead couple learn more about each other.
Grasshoppers quickly moves away from what is the initial draw to something more personal. It is a seamless transition that works since the film establishes a tone early. Beautifully scored, the film will remind those who watch it about the ups and downs of being in love.
Grasshoppers comes to VOD/Digital January 3
