Vince McMahon is back on WWE’s Board of Directors

Somehow, Mr. McMahon returned.

News broke last night that Vince McMahon was plotting a Succession-style return to the company he spent the last five decades into a global force, and less than a day later, the madman’s done it: Vince McMahon is officially back on WWE’s Board of Directors, along with Michelle Wilson and George Barrios. WWE filed a Schedule 13D with the US Securities and Exchange this morning that puts into motion Vince’s plan to eventually be reinstated as the company’s Chairman.

Vince released a press release on his own yesterday, and Wall Street Journal’s reporting on it noted that “unless he has direct involvement as executive chairman from the outset of a strategic review, he won’t support or approve any media-rights deal or sale”. In other words, McMahon – who still owns some 81% of the voting power in the company through shares, despite not being on the Board of Directors until this morning – essentially planned to hold the company hostage until he is reinstated as Chairman. Vince’s Mr. McMahon TV character rarely plotted anything so Machiavellian.

Of course, this story is likely far from over. A comment from the Board regarding their decision to not willingly offer McMahon a seat on the Board is “based on a variety of factors, including non-public information the Board has become aware of“. The fact is that Vince remains a liability for the company after several accounts of sexual assault and mishandling of company funds came out last year – and it sounds like there are more allegations the public is not yet privy to. This could turn into a years-long legal battle.

Of course, the question on wrestling fans’ minds is how this will affect the on-air product of WWE, which most would agree has seen a marked improvement in quality and consistency since Vince’s retirement. In Vince’s press release, he said the following:

WWE has an exceptional management team in place, and I do not intend for my return to have any impact on their roles, duties, or responsibilities.

However, it’s easy to imagine McMahon not being able to stay away from the creative side of things once that’s a possibility for him. Fans hoping to take a walk down a Vince-less Road to WrestleMania will likely have to keep holding their breath.
