Immortal Sergeant #1 is a cleverly-paced cop tale with spunk and early 2000s-style adult humor. The first issue introduces us to Jim Sargent, an old-school detective rapidly approaching his retirement, a day that his younger counterparts seem to be looking forward to more than Jim himself. Jim loves being a cop, but whether Jim likes his fellow officers is an entirely different story. If you put Danny Glover’s character from Lethal Weapon and Michael Douglas’s character from Falling Down together, you get Jim Sargent. Jim’s moody and unapologetic, and after years of being in the dark about a murder case, he may have a new lead.

Immortal Sergeant #1 is a quick, entertaining read with a splash of racy humor that keeps you fully engaged the whole time you’re reading it. Writer Joe Kelly and artist Ken Niimura have created a story that has the potential to do exceptionally well, like their previous comic collaboration from Image Comics, I Kill Giants, which, if you haven’t read, I highly recommend. While Immortal Sergeant #1 doesn’t give away the entire plot in the first issue, we get a good sense of Jim Sargent’s personality.
The art of Immortal Sergeant #1 is a sweet combination of crime noir meets anime, and the results give off a stunning look that you won’t be able to look away from. The book has smooth transitions and excellent placement of word bubbles, and Niimura has a keen eye for giving key moments the extra detail they need to strike an emotional response from readers, whether it’s the extreme close-up shots of Jim frowning into the panel or the wicked speeding car segments. Apart from that, the character designs are simple, and Niimura utilizes each panel.
Immortal Sergeant #1 is a fantastic issue that sets up the story well. I immediately wanted to read the next issue when I was done. Do yourself a favor and pick up this book on your next trip to your local comic shop. Great job all around by Joe Kelly, Ken Niimura, and everyone else who worked on this book.
