Channel Surfing: Awesome TV picks for the week of 01/23/2023

Our Channel Surfing TV picks have luchadoras, the supernatural, and mystery.

Our most recent Channel Surfing TV picks have luchadoras, the supernatural, and mystery. A mother tries to make up for lost time in Against the Ropes. Four strangers are mysteriously linked following a disaster in Wolf Pack. Finally, Rian Johnson’s next project following the success of Glass Onion: A Knives Out Story is Poker Face.

Lucha Libre

In Against the Ropes, Ángela has spent the past six years in prison despite being innocent. After being released, she must readjust to life on the outside and get her life back on track. Most importantly, she must reconnect with her family, particularly her daughter Rocío.

Fueled by Rocío’s fandom of pro wrestling, her mother decides to pursue a career at the local promotion. As her alter ego Novia Negra, Ángela soon finds success. However, can she win the heart of the person most important to her, her daughter?

Stream the first season of Against the Ropes beginning Wednesday, January 25, on Netflix.

Finding Your Pack

Jeff Davis has already found success creating series featuring lycanthropes in Teen Wolf. He goes back to the well again in his newest show that he created and writes, Wolf Pack. The source material is from a novel of the same name written by Edo van Belkom.

A fire in a California forest wakes a supernatural creature causing it to attack passengers stuck in a traffic jam. Afterwards, two wounded teens have an unexplained magnetism towards each other. They also share a common link to another pair of teens who experienced a similar fire 16 years ago. The more time they all spend together, they discover something they all have in common: the bite and blood of a werewolf.

Wolf Pack will premiere Thursday, January 26, on Paramount+.

A Real People Reader

Rian Johnson has become quite successful in the mystery genre with his Benoit Blanc series of films. Here’s hoping that the upcoming Poker Face can make an equally positive impact, and that Natasha Lyonne can be the next great detective.

Lyonne plays Charlie, a woman with the remarkable ability to detect when people are lying. The show will take a mystery of the week format with Charlie hitting the open road in her Plymouth Barracuda. At each stop along her way she encounters a new group of colorful characters as well as another difficult crime to solve.

The first four episodes of Poker Face will be released Thursday, January 26, on Peacock.
