Fantastic Five: The best comics of the week of February 8, 2023

Four different publishers grab spots in our celebration of the five best comics of the week.

Welcome back to Fantastic Five, a Friday tradition here at AIPT where we look back at the best comics of the week. This week was very varied, as four different publishers grabbed spots in this week’s top five! Let’s take a look at the books that achieved this high honor:

#5: Gotham City: Year One #5

Fantastic Five: The best comics of the week of February 8, 2023

Expect meaty answers in Gotham City: Year One as the series barrels toward its finish. As penultimate issues go, King and Fornes deliver plenty of answers while keeping you second-guessing every truth, setting up a showdown that has been brewing ever since Slam met Mrs. Wayne.

#4: Harrower #1

Fantastic Five: The best comics of the week of February 8, 2023

There are elements here that feel reminiscent of Scream and I Know What you Did Last Summer, but a story is the sum of its parts, and there is a lot to take in and enjoy. Harrowerhas all the trappings of your next favorite slasher, complete with mystery, horny teens, and plenty of delicious violence.

#3: Batman #132

Fantastic Five: The best comics of the week of February 8, 2023

Zdarsky and the art team are creating a tense and intriguing plot, combining some classic comic book multiverse displacement stories with solid character work. Tone, atmosphere, and tension are all at their peak here, and the result is a Batman story that makes you feel the danger Bruce is in. Batman #132 is a strong follow-up and another solid addition to Zdarsky’s run thus far.

#1: Monarch #1

Fantastic Five: The best comics of the week of February 8, 2023

Monarch #1 is a terrific start to what looks to be a very promising fantastic sci-fi adventure. Each page is better than the last, with art and colors that give it an extinction-level event feel. Monarch #1 is an excellent start and a must-read.
