Remember Yesterday is a romantic-comedy about second chances, returning home, and finding love. Yes, there is a familiarity about it, but much like horror, rom-coms have greater leeway when it comes to recycling stories. Besides, Valentine’s Day is around the corner and there is only so much Hallmark a person can watch. But is this the alternative someone looking to watch a fun love story is looking for?
Jenny Hill (Jana Allen) is a diner owner whose childhood sweetheart John Raymond (Adrian Monte) has returned home while scouting locations for his next film. (As a side note, a good name can go a long way in movies, and “John Raymond” is as good as it gets for a romantic lead.) The recently divorced Jenny decides to try to live out her dream to perform on stage. Will the two rekindle the romance they once shared or has time and distance changed them too much?
Since the premise will not immediately attract audiences, it is up to the cast to do the heavy lifting. While some of the flashbacks in Remember Yesterday fall flat, the chemistry between Jenny and John is great. There is a spark between the two that makes them easy to root for. You want to see them get together in the end. The supporting cast add to the setting and emotion.
The dialogue is free flowing and the expected cheese that is more acceptable in this genre comes off much less grating than similar films. Wilmington, North Carolina plays a big role in Remember Yesterday, and the script does its best to give the town and the cast a natural feel. The movie does not reinvent the Valentine’s heart, but it is a cozy watch.
Remember Yesterday opens on digital platforms February 14
