“The One-Minute War” rages on this week in The Flash #794, and it couldn’t come fast enough after we learned a Flash may have died last issue. One Flash may be gone, but this week we get a new one with a brand new superhero name to go with it. Can Irey West fill the void, and what will she go by going forward?
This issue opens with Irey facing off against the Fraction villain Miss Murder, who’s all death metal about herself and her look. Irey is fighting to keep Superman and other heroes alive who have been stored in a Flash base, or else the Fraction would use them to power their machines. With time nearly frozen for them, writer Jeremy Adams and artist Roger Cruz show us how Superman is truly great even when slowed down, and Irey is a great hero.
While Irey proclaims her new superhero name in this issue and does a lot of heroic stuff, the heroes take the stage to gain an edge. Adams expertly bounces around different scenes showing us Barry thinking fast, and Jay Garrick. The latter hero is captured and tortured yet comes out of this issue stronger and more badass than ever. It’s also nice to see Barry use his smarts while he and the Flash family reel from the loss of Wally. Overall there are a lot of exciting developments and heroic moments, which is all you can ask for in superhero comics.
I will argue it is a bit odd how Jai West fights in this issue. I think it’s supposed to be comedic–he basically floats around stiff as a board–but it doesn’t quite work. Either the framing or how it’s visually portrayed, it’s more confusing than funny. If we’re logging gripes, it’s also strange the Fraction only sends a handful of soldiers, given they should know by now they can’t mess around with the Flash family.
Cruz’s art continues to be big and in your face, with cool electric effects throughout. Irey’s hair is well done, adding a lot of movement and helping to convey her speed. In the opening scene, the way Cruz conveys Superman’s speed is quite well done, given he’s super slowed down. The heroic moments come through loud and clear thanks to the art throughout the issue.
The next chapter in “The One-Minute War” is an exciting one, as a kid hero makes a case for being your next favorite superhero. Pair that with the expert handling of multiple scenes as the heroes gain a new edge on the Fraction, and you have a highly entertaining event you can’t miss. Flash history is made in The Flash #794.
