Star Trek has been excellent so far, as IDW relaunched the series with Jackson Lanzing and Collin Kelly at the helm. It’s a big week for the series, as Captain Sisko faces a god-killer weapon, and Worf’s narrative sprouts off into the new Star Trek: Defiant series. Picking up where we left off, Star Trek #5 forces our characters to make tough choices while also defending themselves from imminent death. That’s what you get for messing with the Klingons, guys.
This is an action-packed issue, to say the least, with great art by Ramon Rosanas and Erik Tamayo. The crew is inside a god alien, and they’re minutes away from Klingon cult leader Kahless using a god-killing weapon to end its life. While the starships fight, Klingons board the ship forcing hand-to-hand combat and plenty of flesh wounds to commence. These two elements parry back and forth, increasing tension and making for a nonstop thrill ride of an issue.
Meanwhile, Captain Sisko is communing with the gods. It’s a freaky element that adds a lot more weight and high stakes to the story. Sisko wants to do the right thing and keep his crew alive, but he’s also being influenced by these entities that nobody really understands. Not even Sisko. At a key moment, Worf questions Sisko’s actions and makes a good point. Do you blindly follow these god-alien orders, or do you slow down and do the thing we adore in Star Trek and think things through? Worf’s not wrong, but given Sisko’s state of mind, how can he act accordingly?
Worf calling out Sisko does change tactics, which is a nice touch. Possibly the weakest element in this issue is what follows when Sisko leaves the ship, then with a data page between his choice and him being on the planet, he’s joined by others. It’s slightly clunky how he’s surprised here since he’s surprised, but seemingly no time has passed.
IDW has already announced that a crossover event is imminent, and this issue seems to be setting that up. Earth is in grave danger by the end, and it might be Sisko’s fault. This issue does conveniently have Worf pop off, as well as the Klingons, to serve Star Trek: Defiant splitting off as well as keeping the main villain at arm’s length from our heroes. A convenient turn that leaves you wanting to be sure, but with a new god-threat in play, the next and final issue to the story arc should be entertaining.
Star Trek #5 is an action-packed frenzy of hand-to-hand combat and tough decisions. Sisko is still reeling from not really knowing who is speaking to him, while it’s evident a god-killing weapon is probably bad for everyone. Read this issue knowing the stakes are raised, and even more Star Trek is on the way because of it.
